Abrosexuality is a sexual orientation on the multisexual spectrum, defining an individual whose sexuality is changing or fluid. One can change between any sexuality, whether it be monosexual, multisexual, allosexual, asexual, etc. The gender(s) one is attracted to typically change, and the intensity of the attraction or the way one feels attraction may change as well. For example, someone could be homosexual one day, then demisexual the next, then finsexual the next. For some, the changes may be erratic, and for others, they may be regular. Some abrosexual individuals may be fluid between all or a large number of sexualities, while others may only be fluid between a few. Because of their inconsistent attraction, some abrosexual individuals may not feel compelled to seek out a relationship or may prefer a friendship.

While it is possible—and even common—for an individual's sexual identity to shift or change in some way throughout their life, an abrosexual individual's orientation may change more frequently, such as over hours, days, months, or years. The orientation changes may also be more drastic, such as going from straight to gay or going from pansexual to asexual.

Abrosexuality often overlaps with aceflux; however, the difference is that, generally for aceflux individuals, when they feel attraction, the gender(s) they're attracted to are always the same; the only thing that changes is how they're attracted to them or how intensely they're attracted to them. For abrosexual individuals, the gender(s) they are attracted to changes.

History

Both the term and the flag are thought to have originated on DeviantArt in 2013. They gained traction on Tumblr in 2016 and set Abrosexuality Visibility Day on April 3rd.

Subtypes

Abrosexuality means you have a fluid sexuality, which means that you can change sexualities at different times. This means that you can use many queer terms, like lesbian, or gay, bisexual, or asexual etc. and they don’t cancel each other out.

An abrosexual lesbian is someone who is abrosexual, has a fluid identity that changes, that is also sometimes, primarily, or always attracted to the same gender. If someone identifies as abrosexual and also identifies as a lesbian, it means that their attraction to women is a significant aspect of their fluctuating sexual orientation.

The abrosexual term can be used for all types of attractions, not just sexual. It is the partner term to abrosexual gay.

If someone identifies as abrosexual and also identifies as gay, it means that their attraction to people of the same gender is a significant aspect of their fluctuating sexual orientation. Alternatively, an abrosexual gay person may refer to a queer person who, at times is attracted to other genders (cis, trans, alt, etc.) but is primarily or always attracted to the same gender.

Flags

The flag was created by Mod Chad of pride-flags-for-us after an anonymous individual requested it. The anonymous user requested a five-color flag that fades from #46D294 to white to #EE1766. It is unknown why this individual chose these colors specifically. The flag has existed since at least July 3, 2015.

RoseWatera's abrosexual flag

The second flag was created by FANDOM user RoseWatera on February 2nd, 2021. Pink represents attraction to women and feminine-aligned individuals. The purple represents the attraction to women being fluid. White represents fluidity and a-spec identities. Blue represents attraction to men and masculine-aligned individuals. The cyan represents the attraction to men being fluid.

Cryptocrew's alternate abrosexual flag

An alternate flag was created by Cryptocrew at Hayden000s request on January 16, 2021, and was first published on a post one day later. The shades of pink with the "waves" represent fluid and changing attraction while the two symbols are deltas, which are the math symbol for "change."

The fourth alternate was created by FANDOM user Clear.Skyes on April 6, 2021.

The fifth alternate was designed by Pride-Flags on DeviantArt on March 11, 2021. It is the original abrosexual flag with the white middle stripe edited to be purple to represent sexuality and sexual attraction.

Addyroodle's alternate abrosexual flag

The sixth alternate was designed by Addyroodle on October 15, 2021. It is the abrosexual flag's colors, but the stripes have been moved around to symbolize "alternation."

The abrosexual & abroromantic symbol

The symbol was created by Tumblr user lgbt.teen.youth on an unknown date. Xe did so because he wanted to create an abrosexual button, but he couldn't find an abrosexual symbol, so he created one. The user stated, "The gender symbols are separated to indicate movement and change. They can be customized per abro person".

Etymology

The prefix abro- is derived either from the Ancient Greek word ἁβρός (habrós) or its Modern Greek descendant αβρός (avrós), meaning "delicate" or "graceful".
